Conducting Formal Investigations - Foundation Skills Training Workshops
| Target Audience: | Those members of staff who have been identified, selected or newly-appointed on a full, part-time or ‘ad hoc’ basis to undertake internal investigations into instances or allegations of staff misconduct such as bullying, harassment, discrimination or other Employment Law contraventions, and criminal matters such as minor instances of theft, fraud and deception. |
| Aims of Programme: | To provide members of the target audience with a thorough understanding of all aspects of how to conduct a professional investigation in a logically planned and phased approach, and of the place of such an investigation within the relevant legal and regulatory frameworks and required civil and criminal standards. Particular attention is paid to the key aspects of the phasing using the FISCAL ™ model, thereby enabling participants to ensure that they address the essential requirements of the relevant standards at the appropriate stage reached in the investigation. Attention is also paid to the constant need to consider strategic implications as the investigation proceeds and, therefore, of the ‘up-ward briefing’ of senior executives. |
| Learning Style: | The training is workshop-based and takes the form of facilitated learning. The methodology adopted is to blend theory with practice in a continuous reflective exercise which unites the experience of individual delegates with the theory by way of a ‘real life’ case study exercise which covers human, employment and management issues. This is achieved by separating out the case study into sections based upon the phase reached in the investigation, which then form a timed paper-feed process. This allows the delegates to practically experience the application of the theory and of the phased approach to investigations in a ‘dry-run’ situation. The workshop is therefore highly interactive and participative with each section forming the foundations for the next in building the complete learning experience for the delegates |
| Outcomes: | Investigating Officers who are confident, skilled and competent to professionally undertake investigations into any of the serious matters identified above. In addition, each delegate leaves the workshop with a practical set of models, working tools and techniques to apply to investigations, and a facility to record and to develop their own methodologies as they progress through investigations. |
| Proposed Dates: | Workshops are held throughout the year according to the needs of each client. |
| Number of Participants: | Each workshop comprises a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 delegates so as to ensure that the aims of the programme are fully met. |
| Duration of Programme: | The programme is delivered as either a 1 or 2-day event according to the needs of each client. The criterion upon which this decision is based is that of the level of learning gained by the workshop delegates. In the 1-day event the delegates’ involvement in the individual and group exercises is limited owing to the time constraint, whereas in the 2-day event delegates work through the complete investigation of a case study in detail and ‘fast time’, covering all of the aspects of an investigation and rigorously exercising a number of issues which they can reasonably foresee having to address. |
| Cost: | The cost of the service is £1,200 for the 1-day workshop and £2,400 for the 2-day workshop. |
